Ljubljana Marathon

Many cities host a marathon and Ljubljana is no exception. The first event was held in 1996 and attracted a field of 153 participants of whom, eight were ladies. In the 2008 race, the participation had swelled to 771 including 89 women. The marathon race day also has half-marathon and recreational races which (understandably) are even more popular (the total participation figure for last year was 9145). Since 2000, events have also been held for children, swelling the total for last year’s event to 13410 participants. The route loops around the city and marathoners (42 km) must make two circuits to complete the course

2008 Marathon Winners
Last year, the men’s race was won in a time of 2 hours 14 minutes and 41 seconds by Amare Mulu. The 2008 ladies race was won by Tatyana Mesentsva in a time of 2 hours 37 minutes and 13 seconds.

Details of the 2009 Event
The 2009 marathon will take place on Sunday, 25 October. The starting time is 8:30 A.M. and 10 A.M. for the recreational run and marathon events, respectively. The classification for the marathon events are broken down by age in five year bands after the age of 29. To be eligible for the adult event, participants must be 18 years or older.

Registration
Registration for the race can be made on-line through the Marathon’s website (which also has an English version - just click on the British flag). The entry fee for the event is the same for the full and half marathon races. For registrations made before October the cost is 25 €. Late entries (deadline 20th October 2009) incur a fee of 35 €.
